Semba Corporation, in collaboration with Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd., has launched Yamaha Motor’s first-ever “YAMAHA MOTOR Regenerative Lab” (RegeLab). This co-creation space embodies the theme of “regeneration” by utilizing upcycled waste materials for furnishings and artworks. Opened in Yokohama on October 25, 2024, the lab has gained attention for its forward-thinking design.
The Potential of Material Regeneration and Corporate Co-Creation Through FRP Waste-Based Furnishings
Amid increasing demands for addressing environmental issues, “regenerative” has emerged as a new concept, surpassing “sustainable,” by focusing on restoring systems to an even better state. Guided by this theme, Yamaha Motor’s YAMAHA MOTOR Regenerative Lab demonstrates innovative spatial design by repurposing waste materials.
The centerpiece furnishings were crafted from waste generated during Yamaha Motor’s production of competitive swimming pools. These exhibits repurpose FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic), traditionally considered challenging to recycle, into display fixtures. The designs maximize the structural characteristics of the material, with walls doubling as benches, symbolizing the potential of waste materials. Additionally, other furniture and exhibits incorporate upcycled materials such as FRP scraps, boat components, and discarded school desks.
The inaugural exhibit features artworks created from offcuts generated during Yamaha Motor’s manufacturing processes. These installations aim to inspire visitors to view waste materials from a new perspective and spark awareness of environmental issues.
“RegeLab” is a space dedicated to fostering corporate co-creation and the development of new businesses through exhibitions and workshops. As a pioneering initiative for a sustainable society, it offers fresh possibilities for a circular economy. The lab is expected to continue exploring new technologies for waste utilization and their applications across industries.
