Fujiyoshida City is advancing its autonomous EV bus trials with the goal of achieving Level 4 autonomous driving implementation. Scheduled to begin in late January 2025, the “Fujimichi Circular Route” focuses on improving convenience for both daily life and tourism, while also striving for sustainable urban development and decarbonization.
Tackling Overtourism at Mount Fuji and Promoting Decarbonization
Transformative Impact of Evolving Mobility for Local Communities and Tourism
Building on the results of the 2023 trial, Fujiyoshida City plans to operate a new circular route centered around the “Fujimichi” road. The “Fujimichi Circular Route” will connect key areas such as shopping streets, Fujisan Station, World Heritage sites, city hall, and schools through an expanded route spanning approximately 7 kilometers. This initiative is expected to enhance convenience for local residents while also increasing the value of the route as a secondary transportation option for inbound tourists.
One notable feature is the introduction of advanced digital technologies such as the “road-vehicle cooperation system” and “signal coordination system.” These innovations enable collaboration between vehicles and roadside units to improve safety at intersections, enhancing the overall safety of autonomous bus operations. The trial also incorporates the “SEKITORI” mobility reservation platform, allowing passengers to book rides in advance and improving operational efficiency.
During the trial, the autonomous EV bus will operate at Level 2, enabling the evaluation of technical feasibility, operational management, and public acceptance. The ultimate goal is to implement Level 4 autonomous driving by 2025. The general operation scheduled to begin in late January 2025 offers an opportunity for both residents and tourists to experience an innovative mobility solution that showcases Fujiyoshida City’s vision for the future. This experiment is expected to serve as a new model case for public transportation, with nationwide implications.
