ARI Inc. (Shibuya, Tokyo) is collaborating with the Department of Anesthesiology at Yokohama City University School of Medicine and the Yokohama Future Healthcare System Totsuka Kyoryoku Second Hospital to develop a system that uses AI technology to predict the condition of patients under general anesthesia in real time.
Innovating General Anesthesia Management with AI Technology
AI technology is offering new advancements in enhancing the safety of patients undergoing general anesthesia. The collaborative research aims to develop a system where AI predicts the future state of patients based on vital signs during anesthesia and provides real-time information to anesthesiologists. This system is expected to predict risks during anesthesia and facilitate appropriate medical interventions.
With Japan’s aging population leading to an increase in the number of surgeries and patients with complications, advancements in anesthesia technology have improved safety. However, future anesthesia care will need to consider postoperative recovery as well. As the amount of information required for anesthesia management increases, it has become challenging for anesthesiologists to accurately manage all information. This challenge has highlighted the potential of AI technology in predicting future patient conditions.
The joint research aims to develop a system that analyzes real-time vital data such as blood pressure and heart rate during surgery and predicts future states. Data scientists are already prototyping predictive algorithms based on anonymized data provided by Totsuka Kyoryoku Second Hospital. AI predictions are expected to improve the quality of care for patients with high complication risks and reduce the burden of anesthesia management.
This research is scheduled to be presented at the British Journal of Anaesthesia Annual Scientific Meeting in September 2024. Presentation at this prestigious European conference underscores international attention on the application of AI technology in anesthesia care.
Following development, the AI predictive model will undergo validation trials at the collaborating medical institutions, utilizing real-time data from Fujifilm Medical’s anesthesia management system to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm. After validation, efforts will focus on commercialization and market introduction.
This technology, which is garnering attention both domestically and internationally, holds the potential to revolutionize the future of anesthesia management.
