On October 19, 2024, the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) will hold a public open house event. This year’s event, traditionally held in the summer as the “Great Summer Open House,” has been moved to the fall to avoid the risks associated with heatstroke.
A Variety of Programs to Experience Environmental Research
As a research institution dedicated to environmental conservation and a sustainable future, NIES provides valuable insights into changes in the global environment and how they impact people’s lives. The open house serves as a platform to share these research findings with the public. The theme of this year’s event is “Protecting and Nurturing the Environment: 50 Years of NIES Research and a Message for the Future.” It will highlight the institute’s research achievements over the past 50 years while exploring pathways to a sustainable environment in the future.
This year’s open house offers a wide array of programs, with many fun and educational activities for children and adults alike. One of the highlights is the hands-on events, which require prior registration. Participants will have the opportunity to interact directly with NIES researchers and experience cutting-edge environmental research firsthand.
One such program is the “Climate Change Adaptation Board Game,” a unique activity where participants predict the future decades from now and think about how to adapt to global warming. Another program, “Global Warming Q&A,” allows children to ask questions about climate change, with researchers providing easy-to-understand answers, deepening their scientific knowledge. In addition, the “Adsorption Experiment” offers a chance for children to learn about chemistry by observing the changes in liquids, making science fun and engaging.
The open house will also feature the popular “Ecochil Survey” experience event, where participants can learn about the relationship between their health and the environment by engaging in activities such as “Body Composition Measurement” and completing a “Dietary Habit Questionnaire.” This event is part of NIES’s ongoing Ecochil Survey (a nationwide study on children’s health and the environment) and offers a valuable opportunity to learn about how the environment affects health.
This open house not only aims to deepen understanding of environmental issues but also provides an important opportunity for each of us to consider how we can protect and nurture the future of our planet. Through the variety of programs offered by NIES, the event hopes to encourage action toward achieving environmental protection and a sustainable society.
