The theme for World Mental Health Day 2024 is “It’s Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace.” WHO (World Health Organization) and its partners are highlighting the significant connection between mental health and work environments. Improving workplace conditions is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing both the health and productivity of workers.
Challenges Faced by 60% of the Workforce: Mental Health in the Workplace
Today, approximately 60% of the global population is engaged in work, making workplace mental health a major factor in overall well-being. Exposure to risks such as discrimination, harassment, and poor working conditions can lead to deteriorating mental health, which in turn affects job participation and productivity. WHO emphasizes the urgent need for preventive measures to protect mental health in the workplace.
As part of this initiative, the World Federation for Mental Health has been organizing World Mental Health Day on October 10 each year, with a particular focus on workplace environments in 2024. Evidence-based approaches and interventions in the workplace are essential tools to safeguard workers’ mental health and promote better working conditions.
In Japan, several events will be held in conjunction with World Mental Health Day. At Tokyo Tower, an event featuring Rilakkuma as a supporter will take place, with visitors receiving specially designed name cards and flyers featuring the beloved character. Additionally, Rilakkuma-themed posters will appear across various public transportation systems nationwide, aiming to raise awareness about mental health.
Looking forward, continued collaboration between governments, employers, and employees will be vital in tackling workplace mental health issues and establishing sustainable working environments.
