At the 19th High School Chemistry Grand Contest, a team of three female students from Iiyama High School’s Natural Science Club in Nagano Prefecture received the Zeon Challenge Award for their research on a “CO2 Absorbing Ball.” This innovative idea, which uses Euglena to combat global warming, will soon be showcased in an international competition.

The “Koshien of Chemistry” — High School Students Shaping the Future of Science

The High School Chemistry Grand Contest, launched in 2004, provides a platform for high school and technical school students to nurture their creativity and passion for science. Now in its 19th year, the contest attracted over 90 teams and 302 participants nationwide, who competed by presenting their scientific research through posters and oral presentations.
The Zeon Challenge Award, sponsored by Zeon Corporation, recognizes innovative ideas and bold exploration. This year’s award was given to the Natural Science Club of Iiyama High School for their research on developing a “CO2 Absorbing Ball Using MBR.” This project involves encapsulating Euglena, a type of microalgae that performs photosynthesis, in calcium alginate beads to enhance carbon dioxide absorption capabilities.
The students’ research addresses critical environmental issues, providing comprehensive data on CO2 absorption efficiency and external environmental impacts. They plan to present their findings at an international competition early next year.
Kei Sakamoto, the head of Zeon’s judging panel, praised the project, stating, “The idea of encapsulating live Euglena into particles and the experimental methodology used to achieve it are remarkable. Their keen observations and proactive approach to research were instrumental in their success.”
Through this contest, young scientists are being nurtured to lead future technological innovations. Zeon Corporation actively supports these initiatives, emphasizing the importance of fostering creativity and a spirit of scientific inquiry.
The achievements of these young researchers demonstrate how science can address pressing societal issues. Their continued efforts are expected to yield further impactful results.
