Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), in collaboration with its subsidiary Senseair, has developed the “Sunlight R290,” a gas sensor capable of detecting the highly flammable refrigerant R290 (propane). Mass production and shipments of the product will begin in September 2024. This product is particularly targeted at the European market, aiming to provide high-precision detection of refrigerant leaks.

Increasing Demand for R290 Refrigerants and Stricter Regulations

In the refrigerant market, Europe is advancing regulations on PFAS and fluorocarbons (F-gases), prompting a shift from traditional hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants like R410A and R134a to more environmentally friendly natural refrigerants. R290, with a zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and a very low global warming potential (GWP), has seen a rapid increase in use as a refrigerant.
However, since R290 is highly flammable, there is a risk of combustion or explosion if the refrigerant leaks. As a result, technology that can quickly detect refrigerant leaks is crucial for ensuring the safety of air conditioning systems. In response to this need, the safety standard IEC 60335-2-40 edition 7 mandates the inclusion of refrigerant gas leak detection functions in such equipment.
The new “Sunlight R290” sensor employs non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) technology, utilizing an LED light source and a photodiode sensor. This technology ensures that the sensor itself does not generate heat, enabling safe operation even in refrigerant systems using the highly flammable R290.
Additionally, the gas sensor is resistant to interference from vibrations or other gases, offering high robustness and reliability. It not only meets the stringent leak detection requirements set by the IEC 60335-2-40 standard but also features an “Automatic Baseline Correction (ABC)” algorithm that automatically compensates for any performance degradation over time. This technology is expected to significantly reduce the frequency of sensor maintenance.
The product is designed for a wide range of applications, including package air conditioners, room air conditioners, HVAC systems, chiller units, dehumidifiers, and control panel coolers. Its compact size and low power consumption allow it to be flexibly integrated into various devices without constraints on installation location.
With the start of mass production and shipment of “Sunlight R290,” the safety of air conditioning systems using R290 will improve, and the spread of natural refrigerants in the European market is expected to accelerate. Asahi Kasei Electronics has announced its continued commitment to reducing environmental impact and enhancing safety through new technological developments.
