Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is celebrated as one of Finland’s most iconic architects, with works that continue to be admired worldwide. His most famous designs include the rounded Aalto Vase, the versatile Stool 60, and the Louis Carré House, which exemplifies harmony with nature. Aalto’s lifelong mission was to design spaces that enriched the lives of all people, not just the privileged few.
Aalto’s inspiration stemmed from nature, daily life, and, significantly, his deep bond with his first wife, Aino. 【Biography】
Alvar Aalto (1898-1976)
Born in 1898 in Kuortane, Finland, Alvar Aalto studied at the Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University) from 1916. Coming from a family of forest stewards, he was closely connected to nature from a young age. In 1923, he established his own architecture office, and in 1935, he co-founded Artek with his wife, Aino, to globally distribute their furniture and textiles. Over his lifetime, Aalto designed more than 200 buildings, each known for its unique blend of organic forms, materials, and light.
Aino Aalto (1894-1949)
Born Aino Marsio, she joined Aalto’s firm in 1924 and married Alvar shortly thereafter. Known for her “Bölgeblick” glassware released in 1932, she remained Alvar’s partner in both life and work until her death in 1949.
Elissa Aalto (1922-1994)
After graduating from the University of Helsinki’s Department of Architecture in 1949, she joined Aalto’s firm and married Alvar in 1952. Following his death, she dedicated herself to preserving and managing Aalto’s architectural plans and designs.
