Ecotourism is a system that aims to convey the unique attractions of a region, such as its natural environment and historical culture, to visitors, helping them understand their value and importance, ultimately leading to their conservation. By communicating a region’s resources to tourists, local residents also rediscover the value of their own assets, enhancing the originality of the region’s tourism and revitalizing not only tourism but the community as a whole.

Let’s Use Ecotourism to Revitalize Local Communities!

The “Ecotourism Promotion Conference” (2003-2004), chaired by the Minister of the Environment, defined ecotourism as a form of tourism that focuses on natural environments and historical cultures, offering experiences and learning opportunities while taking responsibility for the conservation of these resources. The “Ecotourism Promotion Act” (Act No. 105 of 2007) outlines its basic principles as “conservation of the natural environment,” “promotion of tourism,” “regional revitalization,” and “use as a platform for environmental education.”
By advancing this initiative, three key changes are expected: “I change,” “the community changes,” and “everyone changes,” making it one of the steps we can take for a better future.

■I Change
By recognizing the beauty and depth of nature, we develop a love for it, which leads to actions related to environmental issues and conservation.
■The Community Changes
By reassessing the unique charms of a region, local residents gain confidence and pride in their area, making it a more vibrant community.
■Everyone Changes
We preserve our natural and cultural heritage and pass it down as a legacy for future generations, leading to a dynamic and sustainable region.

The Ministry of the Environment is currently accepting applications for the 20th Ecotourism Award (Minister of the Environment Award). The award recognizes individuals or organizations involved in tourism that leverages natural environments and related lifestyles and cultures (it does not have to be explicitly labeled as ecotourism!). Award winners will be presented with their certificates at a ceremony held by the Ministry of the Environment, and their efforts will be actively promoted through various events and other platforms.
