Hoshinoya Karuizawa, located in Nagano Prefecture, is launching the “Karuizawa Nature Stay Winter,” an eco-tour that delves into the coexistence of humans and bears in a rich natural setting. Co-organized by Hoshino Resorts, which has upheld Karuizawa’s environmental and cultural preservation for 110 years, and the wildlife conservation group Picchio, this tour offers a unique experience to learn about the winter forest and wildlife in Karuizawa.

A Private Nature Tour to Discover Bear Behavior in the Quiet Winter Forest

In collaboration with Picchio, Hoshinoya Karuizawa presents the exclusive “Karuizawa Nature Stay Winter” tour, where guests can learn about the behavior of Asiatic black bears preparing for hibernation, along with birdwatching and other activities. This private tour, limited to one group per day, allows participants to experience the peaceful winter forests of Karuizawa and gain insights into the lives of local wildlife.
Since 1998, Picchio has worked on bear conservation in Karuizawa, applying over 20 years of expertise to explore ways for humans and bears to coexist harmoniously. Tour participants will follow bear tracks, observing claw marks and feeding sites, while also learning about bear-safe garbage bins and viewing a simulated capture drum-can trap. After the tour, participants can interact with Picchio’s “bear dog,” trained to help prevent human-bear conflicts.
Winter in Karuizawa also brings opportunities for birdwatching, as the bare trees make it easier to spot birds that were previously hidden. Picchio’s birdwatching program allows visitors to observe migratory winter birds from Siberia and witness how they endure the harsh season. When snow covers the ground, participants can enjoy “animal tracking,” following footprints in the snow to uncover animal behavior and life patterns.
To conclude the tour, participants can reserve the “Forest Edge Cafe & Bar,” an exclusive experience for overnight guests, where they can immerse themselves in the tranquil winter forest at night. Situated by Kera Pond, the bar offers seasonal hot cocktails made with Shinshu fruits and herbs, along with forest-themed sweets. Beneath the glow of the fireplace and starlit sky, guests can savor the serene beauty of the winter forest and enjoy a relaxing, peaceful moment.
